Cosmetic Dermatology

Coastal Dermatology provides a variety of services, including cosmetic. Below, you’ll find a list of the cosmetic procedures we perform:

Botox Cosmetics

Botox is a nonsurgical, physician –administered aesthetic treatment that improves the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Botox works by reducing the contraction of the muscles that cause those persistent lines that develop over time. This results in relaxation of the wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, frown, and laugh lines. A chemical eyebrow lift may also be performed. Botox will not radically change your facial appearance. You will still be able to perform facial expressions without those stubborn wrinkles and creases.

Dr. Soderberg will inject tiny quantities of Botox directly into your facial muscles. No anesthesia is required. A slight stinging sensation likened to a bug bite will subside immediately following the injection. You may return to work immediately after the procedure. The full effect of wrinkle relaxation will be seen in four to seven days. One treatment can show visible results for three to six months. After several treatments many patients experience longer periods of wrinkle reduction.

The function of a skin peel is to create an even controlled shedding of several layers of damaged cells. This exposes a new fresh layer of skin with a more even color and a smoother texture. In addition, the peel stimulates new cells to grow, thereby tightening the skin which decreases wrinkling.

Here we offer a wide variety of chemical peels. Our certified aestitician performs all superficial chemical peels. Dr. Soderberg performs all medium depth chemical peels.

  • Superficial chemical peels - “lunch-time peels”. Very little “down-time” with minimal to mild peeling. May apply make-up and return to work. Please see our Spa Services page for more information on our superficial chemical peels.
  • Medium Depth chemical peels - Most people take 5-7 days to heal from an average TCA peel. TCA is a non-toxic chemical which has been used to perform chemical peels for over 30 years.
  • TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Peel - Effectively improves dull, weathered skin, brown pigmentation, fine wrinkles, sun damage, and shallow acne scars.
  • TCA/Jessners Peel - For moderate photoaging including brown sun spots, growths, wrinkles, blotchy pigmentation (including the mask of pregnancy) and pre-cancers.

Soft Tissue Augmentation (wrinkle fillers)

Soft tissue fillers have been used for more than a century to improve contours and scars, soften wrinkles, and enhance lips. The appearance of wrinkles and facial folds can be smoothed by adding volume underneath and bringing the skin back up to the surface. This is done by injecting materials called dermal fillers into the skin. Dr. Soderberg performs soft tissue augmentation using a wide array of dermal fillers. Both, topical anesthesia and nerve blocks are used to increase patient comfort during the procedure. Minor swelling or bruising may appear at the injection site. The resulting decrease in wrinkles is immediate. The procedure generally takes 30 minutes and is performed in the office. The results of soft tissue augmentation with injectable fillers are not permanent. The continued aging of your face and variables in the absorption of fillers will affect how long your results last.

Types of Fillers Used by Dr. Soderberg:

  • Collagen - A natural protein that supports the skin. Injectable collagen formulas derived from human dermis include Cosmoderm or Cosmoplast. There is no requirement for allergy testing. The ideal filler for very fine lines and lip enhancement. This is a great initial filler for a novice patient or a short-term correction for an upcoming special occasion. Results last 4 months.
  • Hyaluronic Acid - A natural substance found in our bodies. It is well suited to plump thin lips and fill facial wrinkles such as the wrinkles around our mouths, lips, and chin. It may also be well-suited for some surface wrinkles and concave scars. Results may last up to a year. Restylane, Perlane, and Juvaderm are examples of hyaluronic acid fillers.
  • Hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) - A mineral-like compound found naturally in human bones, suspended in a gel-like formulation. It is the heaviest of the temporary facial fillers and is recommended to fill wrinkles, as well as to enhance fullness of the cheeks and other facial contours. Results may last up to 18 months.
